Upcycled Denim Tote Bag Workshop with Katie Furukawa

Are you intimidated by sewing with denim? Let's demystify it for you! Join Katie Furukawa and learn everything you need to know to make your new favorite denim tote bag in one go. In this workshop, we will create a beautiful and durable patchwork denim tote bag.


Skills you will learn: dissecting denim, sew with denim, attach interfacing, and create a bag.

BYOD: Bring your own denim! Please bring your own used denim, approximately equivalent to 2 pairs of adult-size jeans. Please ensure that your denim is CLEAN and de-wrinkled.



There will be an additional $13 fee for lining fabric, hardware, and interfacing. Denim can be provided for an additional $10. Pay instructor directly for materials via cash, Paypal, or credit card.


Supplies Needed For Class:


  • Size 90 jeans/denim needles (will be provided if you are borrowing a machine)
  • Sewing machine with power cord, and foot pedal. Standard / zig zag foot is the only presser foot you will need. There are 4 machines available for classroom use if you need one, please choose this option at check out.
  • 2 empty bobbins that are compatible with your sewing machine
  • Scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, cutting mats and irons are all available for use at the studio. You may bring your own if you prefer.



  • Your own used denim, approximately equivalent to 2 pairs of adult-size jeans. Please ensure that your denim is CLEAN and ironed prior to class. (Denim can be provided by instructor for a $10 additional material fee, if needed - please notify prior to class.)
  • 50 WT cotton or 40 WT polyester thread in a denim-y blue color (such as Mettler color 0351) -
  • Optional: bring (one) 4″ x WOF cotton woven fabric for bag handle accents. There will also be accent fabrics available at the class if you choose not to bring your own, this is only required if you want to customize the look of your bag!



Katie Furukawa (she/her) is a quilter, designer, and educator based out of San Francisco. An active member of the Silicon Valley Modern Quilt Guild, she loves to work with bright colors and Japanese prints. In 2022, Katie began her own handmade home goods business, Old River Design Co.
