11am to 5pm

Coastside Quilt Studio, 1305 Palmetto Avenue, Unit E, Pacifica

Improv Toolkit

Discover the relaxing imperfection of improv while practicing several  "wonky" piecing techniques. Insert strips, build lopsided cabins, and ladders, slice up wedges, and let the geese go wild. Your improv blocks can be assembled into a sampler-ish quilt (see follow-up workshop) or turned into potholders and pillow covers.

OPTIONAL: You may sign up for the Sunday Workshop to finish your quilt!

Required Supplies:

  • 1/2 yard of 4 solid colors or blenders:
    • one each very light, medium light, medium dark and dark, plus 1/4 yard of a bright "pop" color. A good way to choose colors is to match them from a printed fabric whose colorway you like. That fabric could also be your backing if you have 1 yard+ of it, but it is not essential for the class.
  • Neutral thread
  • Sewing machine

About Joy-Lily

My mother was a dressmaker, so I began sewing at an early age. I studied art and worked as a graphic designer in New York for 16 years. In 1986 I started learning to quilt and simultaneously teaching it at a local senior center in San Francisco. Now I teach for quilt guilds, art centers and for Parks and Recreation. My current interest in improv quilting is informed by my art and design experience. My book Carefree Quilts, a freestyle twist on classic designs, was published in 2012.  It's about improv, but we didn't call it that in 2012.
